Wagyu (pronounced ‘wag-you’) is a breed of cattle native to Japan. The word literally means Japanese beef - “wa” means Japanese and “gyu” means beef.

Our beautiful Wagyu are raised on lush green pastures and enjoy a good, healthy, sustainable diet with plenty of fresh Snowdonia air. We both proudly tend our animals from their first tentative steps through to maturity around 36 months, nearly double the time for other breeds. They enjoy a happy, healthy natural life with a few pints of local beer for good measure.

We care passionately for both welfare, environment and farming sustainably with low input is important to us. Mixed farms that use ruminants to turn grass into food and improve soil structure are becoming recognised as being at the forefront of sustainable farming. Using animals to turn grasses into meat and help build nutrient levels in the soil means we can minimise artificial fertiliser use and maximise local quality food production.

Localism and Independence is key to maintaining sustainability and supporting our local economy. We are committed to building a healthy and sustainable business at Plas Bodaden.

Wagyu beef is considered a healthy option too as it contains a high percentage of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid with its intense marbling, improving the ratio of monounsaturated fats. Conjugated Linoleic Acid is an omega-6 fatty acid (CLA) is a fatty acid linked to multiple health benefits. Wagyu beef contains the highest amount of CLA per gram of any foodstuff - about 30% more than other beef breeds. So as well as being delicious its healthy for you too!

We ensure quality not quantity of our Wagyu- growing perfection takes time so we won't always have beef available - its not continually year round.

It’s important to us that all parts of each cow are used and nothing goes to waste. In the UK alone, it is estimated that 100,000 cows worth of beef goes to waste yearly. For this reason we offer meat boxes with a variety of cuts (usually a mix of joints, steaks, mince, diced, burgers, pies etc).

Taking such a cross-section of the cows meat allows every customer to take holistic responsibility for the cow they derive meat from; ensuring nothing is tossed to one side — from nose to tail, everything is learnt to be valued and appreciated.
